If you took a moment to speak with the folks at the Times, you would
discover that they have a more sophisticated view about copyright than
you. They are quietly pleased when people pass around their articles
around -- they have correctly concluded that it drives traffic to their
site, generates new subscribers, and also increases use of their paid
archive access. They thus would be very unhappy if the world conformed
to your absolutist approach.

It's rather odd to watch the traffic on the IP list prattle on about
the injustice of the DMCA take-down notices and then segue to a story
from the NY Times, stolen in its entirety.
There will continue to be pressure for laws like the DMCA as long as
respected people in the establishment continue to feel that there's
nothing wrong with making thousands of complete copies of an article.
Just remember that this article will get lower ratings and generate
lower revenues thanks to this piracy.
Laws only come about when moral persuasion fails. Alas, I've tried all
of the arguments I have.
