Subject: More Re Election Day
On the thread of what technologists can do to help out
up to and on Election Day (that's not focused simply
on voter-verified paper ballots)--
Verified Voting Foundation has two programs IP readers
should find of interest:
1) TechWatch for technologists to assist with election
protection efforts by poll watching, poll working, and
observing pre-election voting technology testing.
More info below (including email to circulate to gather
volunteers) and opportunity to join the more than 1300
TechWatch volunteers already signed up at:
http://www.verifiedvoting.org/techwatch/
2) Election Incident Reporting System, which enables
voter protection organizations to receive reports and
respond rapidly to all kinds of election day problems,
as well as tracking a variety of other useful data.
The Election Protection Coalition, consisting of the
Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, People
for the American Way Foundation, and more than 60 other
organizations, will be running a production test of
the system during Tuesday's Florida primary election.
For November's election, we'll open the system up to
incident reports from the public... in the meantime,
call 866-OUR-VOTE to report election problems.

Dear Potential Voting Rights Advocate,
We'd like to let you know about an opportunity for
technology professionals to help out around Election Day.
As part of an effort to assist voter protection groups in
making sure as many voters have their votes counted as
possible, the non-partisan Verified Voting Foundation has
organized a TechWatch program to enlist technology
professionals (aka Geeks) in ensuring election integrity.
Please volunteer for TechWatch at
http://www.verifiedvoting.org/techwatch/
Volunteers who sign up with TechWatch will have the
opportunity to get trained and help out with observing and
documenting:
* Logic & Accuracy Testing of voting technology by election
officials prior to Election Day
* Poll Watching on Election Day (assigned to a single
polling place or central election office)
* Election Incidents on Election Day (on dispatch from an
Election Incident Reporting system to polling places
within a given county)
By applying technical expertise to mind the polls, TechWatch
volunteers can chronicle election problems for follow-on
litigation and policymaking in a way that most poll watchers
cannot.
More than 1300 technologists have already volunteered, but
it will take thousands of TechWatch volunteers to cover
priority states and key counties, starting with the Florida
primary on August 31 and continuing through to the
November 2 general election and beyond. (We are particularly
concerned with these states: Colorado, Florida, New Mexico,
Ohio, and Pennsylvania. So please forward this on to your
friends.)
Please join with Verified Voting Foundation and our current
and invited partners: Advancement Project, Americas'
Families United Voter Protection Project, BlackBoxVoting,
California Voter Foundation, Citizen's Alliance for Secure
Elections (Ohio), Common Cause, CompuMentor, Computer
Professionals for Social Responsibility, Electronic Frontier
Foundation, Global Exchange Fair Election Project, Lawyer's
Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Leadership Conference
for Civil Rights, National Committee for Voting Integrity,
People for the American Way, ACORN / Project Vote, Quixote
Foundation, TrueVoteMD, Unity '04 / National Coalition for
Black Civic Participation, VotersUnite, Working Assets /
ActForChange, and others.
Please volunteer for TechWatch at
http://www.verifiedvoting.org/techwatch/
Let's make sure every vote counts as cast,
