Exploring the Intricacies of Google IPO
      - Aug 3, 2004 08:00 PM (AP Online)

By MICHAEL J. MARTINEZ AP Business Writer

NEW YORK (AP) -- I want in. And for once, it looks like I might
actually get in. Initial public offerings, known as IPOs, aren't
usually for regular folks. Normally, before a stock hits the open
market for the first time, the company sells most of the IPO shares
to major investment houses and gives hugely discounted options to
employees, board members and "friends and family."

I have neither friends nor family at any major pre-IPO companies.
Who does?

But along came Google Inc., whose flagship Web site,
http://www.google.com , has been one of my favorite Internet tools
for years. The company that brought simple and accurate Internet
searches to the masses now wants to do the same for Wall Street stock
offerings through a so-called Dutch auction. If Google's unusual IPO
is successful, it could change the way companies are brought to
market.

To participate, all I have to do is go to http://www.ipo.google.com
and place a bid. If my bid comes in close to, or above, the average
of all the bids made, then I can buy shares at the average price. And
when the IPO officially launches on the Nasdaq Stock Market, expected
some time this month, I can choose to hold or sell _ like any other
IPO shareholder. No friends and family, no investment banks hogging
all the shares.

An IPO for the people, it seemed. I wanted to find out if that was
really the case.
