EAST FISHKILL, N.Y. -(Dow Jones)- International Business Machines Corp.
(IBM) revealed a new class of semiconductor products, able to monitor
and adjust their functions to improve performance and power consumption
without human intervention.

The technology, called "eFuse", can sense when a chip needs a tune-up
and alter the efficiency of circuitry to enhance performance or avoid a
potential problem.

In a press release Friday, IBM said the autonomic capability is expected
to change the way chips are integrated into computers, cell phones,
consumer electronics and other products.

Bernard Meyerson, vice president and chief technologist of IBM Systems
and Technology Group, said, "eFuse reroutes chip logic, much the way
highway traffic patterns can be altered by opening and closing new
lanes."
