Real Networks takes on iTunes

REAL NETWORKS says it has created technology that allows songs
purchased through its online music services to be played on Apple
Computer's popular iPod player.
The announcement comes just months after RealNetworks complained that
Apple had rebuffed its attempts to form an alliance.
In an interview last Friday, RealNetworks chief executive Rob Glaser
said he did not know how Apple would react to the new technology.
Apple, based in California, did not return numerous phone calls seeking
comment.
Mr Glaser said the new system, called Harmony Technology, will let
people securely transfer music bought using RealNetworks' music
download services to an iPod or virtually any other portable music
player.

As I recall, reverse-engineering is OK...don't know if the
circumvention clauses of the DMCA are applicable here. It will
interesting to see how Apple reacts.
