Dave-
Backing up Bob's comment, here is an email from a close friend who is a senior pilot for a major American airline:

------
In consideration of the change in flight crew procedural response, armed
pilots, air marshalls, and especially the reinforced flight deck door, there is no reason to screen passengers for anything other than explosives, and we do not have the effective means to do that. Screening for nail clippers, scissors,
and any other portable implements including guns is meaningless.

The avenues available to effect assault upon an aircraft are numerous. The taking of an aircraft for use as a piloted missile is practically impossible. The methods remaining to accomplish that are few and the TSA is not dealing with
it. Statisical probability of doing so is almost the requisite 10 to the
minus ninth.

The TSA is neither compromising safety nor protecting it. They are just
wasting our time and money.
