The lack of oversight not only means that citizens are at risk from
thieves who work for the "Security" services taking things out of their
bags,
it means that we're also at risk from terrorists who work for them
putting bombs in,
and from drug smugglers who work for them putting
drugs in at one airport and removing them at another,
and from corrupt cops who work for them planting drugs in innocent
people's luggage,
and from political plumbers planting "terrorist" or other politically
incriminating
material in the luggage of usual suspects - particularly since the watch
lists
let them know when politically incorrect people are flying.
Problems can be reduced using procedures like the "two-person rule"
used for handling classified information, which means that two TSA
employees would need to be corrupt for them to get away with anything,
but regular civilian police forces have enough trouble with corrupt cops
that it wouldn't be surprising if eventually that control breaks down
also.
Meanwhile, it's time to add Miami to those airport signs about
"Nairobi airport is not secure".
