What's interesting about this is how clearly it shows the failure of
the Green/Nader alliance of 1996 and 2002. Nader was nominally running
to help build the Green Party. After two such presidential runs, the
Green Party's nomination is unremarkable--Terry McAullife isn't trying
to keep the Greens from running a candidate, and he probably
understands that the weakness of the Green Party makes a non-celebrity
Green presidential candidate a wash in the presidential race and a
slight plus down the ticket for the Democrats in every race where there
is not a Green candidate, which is almost every partisan race in the
country. Nader running as an independent is a threat, however, and
McAullife treats it as such.
The Greens don't have the skills to pay the bills. Those of us who
favor some of the Green platform need to face the fact that the Green
Party isn't capable of implementing it, not because of media bias, or
two-party domination of the electoral system, or whatever other excuse,
but because the Greens don't have a strategy for overcoming these
obstacles.
