Subject: Make sure your vote is counted - be absentee on election day!

For IP if appropriate. From a good friend in NM.

Hi folks,
If you've been following the stories about potential (past, present and
future) fraud when electronic voting is not accompanied by any paper
trail, I'm about to suggest two important courses of action.

First, register as early as possible (state regulations vary, so check
your particulars) for an absentee ballot. These ballots are collected
in physical form and recorded in physical form, providing a means for
an auditable paper trail so far not provided by current election plans.

Second, notify your state of your intention to do this now, so that
adequate preparations can be made for sufficient resources to handle
what may be an unexpectedly large number of such requests. I plan to
write a letter to the editor of the Santa Fe New Mexican this weekend
(we have the NM caucus on Tuesday, when I'll be out of state and not
able to vote, which led me to this idea for November).

This is a personal choice, as well as a personal statement about the
value we place on the integrity of our votes, and our right to make
sure they are counted! We have already been informed that adding a
paper trail to the electronic voting machines already contracted for
2004 "is not possible in the time available". Therefore, it is worth
investigating other innovative, accountable means.
