[IP] more on much of PATRIOT is neutral legislation for civil liberties
From: Einar Stefferud <Stef@xxxxxxx>
Granted that some problems with the act should be carefully examined
and then resolved!...
But, on the other side, is it possible that some of the criticism is
off the mark. With so many people just spewing hate for Bush, because
he is not a democrat or is not left winged enough, or whatever, it seems
very likely that many of them have not even read the act or checked the
"facts" they shout.
I vividly recall that Dave once sent a message to IP that pointed out that
there is, by the dictionary definition, such a thing as a false fact.
I believe that the string "false fact" was in the subject.
I cannot find that message in my trove of IP stuff, but I recall it was
something like "A FACT is a widely believed statement"...
Which suggests that what is often called a fact, is only a widely believed
assumption or opinion.
Much of what I see about the Patriot Act is what I claim is opinion,
or at most unproven allegations.
I do not know how to get the discussion to settle down and address true facts.
Cheers...\Stef
