Hi Dave!
Thought you would find this pricelist regarding DSL offerings in Athens,
Greece, amusing:
50 euro "activation fee"
50 euro "installation fee"
100 euro for equipment (modem and filters)
These are one-off charges. Now on to the monthly fees:
384kbps: 32 euro for the line + 58 euro for the ISP (total 90)
512kbps: 60 euro for the line + 88 euro for the ISP (total 148)
1024kbps: 112 euro for the line + 171 euro for the ISP (total 283)
Which means that in a "European" country of minimum wage ~500 euro, a
netizen needs 200 euro set-up fees plus 283 euro MONTHLY to have a
moderately fast Internet connection.
Meanwhile, in a third-world country (Brazil) without a telco monopoly, I
pay R$79.90 (?22.09) a month for the line (300kbps), plus R$19.90 (?5.49)
for the ISP; total, ?27.58 a month. If I wanted 1024kbps, the total cost
would be ?54.92 a month.
However, the minimum wage here is just over ?66.

I think the key thing to remember is that the http: at the front
of a web address stands for Hyper TEXT Transfer Protocol.
