[IP] more on US railroad uses Wi-Fi to run 'driverless' trainsRisks Digest 23.05
From: Wulf Losee <qx49@xxxxxxxxxxx>
Dave:
A RR engineer friend of mine says that the RR he works for (not the
Burlington Northern) installed a similar system last year. The goal was to
save money by reducing the number of engineers needed to move cars around
the yard. The unanticipated result -- I'm paraphrasing him -- was it took 2
to 3 times longer to move the same number of cars around -- because, from a
remote control terminal, it's harder to judge speeds and distances. He said
there were numerous smashups while the controllers learned the system. I
wonder if this will really pay for itself in the long run.
