SSRT5957 rev.0 - HP Tru64 UNIX IPSEC Tunnel ESP Mode Remote
                 Unauthorized Disclosure of Encrypted Data

NOTICE:
The information in this Security Bulletin should be acted upon
as soon as possible.

INITIAL RELEASE:
09 August 2005

POTENTIAL SECURITY IMPACT:
remote unauthorized disclosure of encrypted data

SOURCE:
Hewlett-Packard Company
HP Software Security Response Team

VULNERABILITY SUMMARY:
Several potential security vulnerabilities have been reported on
HP Tru64 UNIX systems using an IPsec tunnel mode configuration
which uses ESP without authentication. When running this
configuration a remote attacker could force an error such that a
portion of a plain-text message can be intercepted by the
attacker.

BACKGROUND:

- From the NISCC Vulnerability report VU#4033:

A vulnerability affecting IPsec was identified by the Information
Security Group (ISG) at Royal Holloway, University of London. The
ISG outlines three attacks that applies to a special case of the
usage of IPsec; this is where IPsec is configured to provide
confidentiality only with no integrity protection in tunnel mode.
Under this setup, an attacker can modify sections of the IPsec
packet and hence cause the endpoint to generate an error on
receipt of such modified packets. These errors are relay back to
the sending host via the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP);
because of the design of ICMP, these messages directly reveal
segments of the header and payload of the IPsec packet in
cleartext. An attacker can then intercept the ICMP messages to
retrieve the data in plaintext.

For Further details see the NISCC web site at www.unirad.co.uk

RESOLUTION:

Until the correction is available in a mainstream release patch
kit, HP is releasing the following Early Release Patch (ERP) kits.

The ERP kits use dupatch and will not install over any installed
Customer Specific Patches (CSPs) that have file intersections with
this ERP. Please contact your service provider for assistance if
the ERP installation is blocked by any of your installed CSPs.

The fixes contained in the ERP kits are scheduled to be available
in the following mainstream patch kit:

    5.1B-4

Early Release Patches

The ERP delivers the following files:

     /usr/lib/nls/msg/en_US.ISO8859-1/ipsec.msg
     /usr/share/sysman/menu/tasks/ipsec/ipsec
     /usr/share/sysman/menu/tasks/ipsec/ipsec.cb.tcl

Note: After installing this ERP, customers should run
"/usr/sbin/sysman ipsec". If there are any unsafe IPsec
connections, a warning message will be displayed.
