DESCRIPTION
"xinetd"[1] is an alternative to the inetd superserver, used to start
services on demand.
Version 2.3.12 fixes several problems[3] found in previous versions,
including:
- memory leak (CAN-2003-0211)[2]. Versions prior to 2.3.11 have a
memory leak which manifests itself with each refused connection,
which can easily lead to a denial of service condition.
- problem while using cups-lpd with our xinetd package (ticket
#9238[4]). Our init script for xinetd did not remove the TMP and
TMPDIR environment variables before starting the service, causing
problems with cups-lpd and other services which use these variables
and change uid after startup.
Several other problems have been fixed in the 2.3.12 release. A
detailed changelog can be obtained at reference [3].
SOLUTION
It is recommended that all xinetd users upgrade their packages. The
service will be automatically restarted if needed.
IMPORTANT: since version 2.3.11, the "RECORD" option to the
"log_on_failure" configuration directive has been removed. The
packages provided with this update automatically remove this option
from /etc/xinetd.conf if found.
Individual services, however, are not automatically checked for this
option. Regarding the packages distributed with Conectiva Linux, only
proftpd supplies an xinetd configuration file with the "RECORD"
option enabled. Administrators using proftpd in the inetd mode (which
is the default mode only in Conectiva Linux 7.0) should remove this
keyword manually from the /etc/xinetd.d/proftpd file. Future proftpd
updates will already have it removed.
